Adagio and Rondo K. 617
This quintet (in C minor and C major) was composed in Vienna in the last year of Mozart’s life (1791) and was premièred that year by the glass harmonica player Mariane Kirchgeßner, for whom it is assumed that all of Mozart’s few surviving works for that instrument were written. It is now more usually performed at the piano (or, occasionally, the organ).  The glass harmonica was invented in 1761 by Benjamin Franklin, and enjoyed brief domestic popularity in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This Adagio and Rondo, the product of Mozart’s most mature style, was his last chamber music composition.
