Ah, lo previdi! K. 272
One of Mozart’s concert arias for soprano and orchestra (here heard in its piano reduction), this work was written in Salzburg in 1777. It is Mozart’s first great concert aria, and is more a scene than a stand-alone aria, effectively in three sections: “Ah, lo previdi!” – “Ah, t’invola” – “Deh, non varcar”. The text is from Vittorio Amadeo Cigna-Santi’s Andromeda, and the work was written for the soprano Josepha Duschek, wife of famed Czech composer Franz Xaver Duschek, then visiting from Prague. Mozart was obviously proud of the intermezzo piece as his letters show that he regularly recommended it to pupils.
