Da schlägt die Abschiedsstunde from K. 486
This aria is sung by the character Frau Herz in Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario), a comedy with music in one act. Stemming from one of the most productive periods in Mozart’s life (in the next 18 months he completed both Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni), Der Schauspieldirektor was set to a text by Johann Gottlieb Stepanie the Younger and premièred in the Schönbrunn Palace orangerie, in February 1786. It was composed for the celebrations connected to the visit of the Governor-General in Vienna, and it was performed together with Salieri’s Prima la musica e poi le parole.
