This song, Mozart’s only setting of a text by Goethe, is the high point of Mozart’s song output in Vienna in 1785. Unlike usual strophic song structures Mozart here composed each verse independently, creating a complete dramatic world, turning the song into a mini-opera rather than a succession of scenes.
