Mozart, like many in his time, was fascinated by the culture of the Ottoman Empire, and used it for inspiration and source material for a large variety of his compositions, whether as mise en scène or actual musical influence. The so-called Turkish mode crops up across his work, most memorably in the “Rondo alla turca” and the opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and this musical relationship between Mozart and the Middle East has been explored and enhanced more recently by projects such as Dream of the Orient (Concerto Köln/Saraband) and Hughes de Courson’s highly popular Mozart in Egypt series. Jeremy Summerly, from London’s Royal Academy of Music, talks about this intriguing musical and cultural connection, in a sense the underlying basis for the Palestine Mozart Festival itself.
