Piano Quintet in E flat major K. 452
This work is unique in Mozart’s oeuvre for its characteristic instrumentation, a world away from the sound-world inhabited by the many divertimenti and serenades for wind instruments, which tend to pit pairs of instruments against each other. Here it is one of each wind instrument, each with a very different sonority, against the common background of the piano. The quintet was composed in Vienna in 1784, and Mozart was instantly happy with it, declaring it “the best work I have ever composed”.
