Between July and November 1783 Mozart completed a brace of piano sonatas (K.330 – K.333) of which this is the second, and probably the most famous, due to the enduring popularity of its final movement. (The Piano Sonata in C K.330 is being performed in Event Two.) Unusually this sonata opens with a Theme and Variations, followed by a Minuet and closing with a March-Rondo. This so called rondo alla turca is Mozart’s homage to the oriental style so popular at the time, with imaginary drums and cymbals imitating the music of the Turkish marching band. Fine though this is, it is the middle minuet movement perhaps that holds the most interest, being one of the finest sonata movements in Mozart’s oeuvre.
