This duet was written to be added to Idomeneo for a private performance in March 1786 at the home of Johann Adam, Prince of Auersperg, in Vienna, as a substitute for the duet S’io non moro a questi accenti. The aria Non temer, amato bene K.490 (heard in Event Fourteen, Event Fifteen and Event Nineteen) was written for the same performance.
